Inquire about the photographer's experience specifically with newborns. Newborn photography requires a unique set of skills, including safety protocols, patience, and an understanding of infant behavior. Being CPR certified & having (at least) a few years of experience working closely with infants is really paramount.
Are You Trained in Newborn Safety?
Safety should always be the top priority during newborn photo sessions. Ensure that your photographer is trained in newborn safety techniques, such as proper posing and handling of newborns. Tragic accidents can happen if your newborn is handled by someone who doesn't know how to do poses correctly & that is a scary situation you do NOT want to put your baby in. If I can stress the importance of one question to ask, this would be it.
I'd also like to touch on having an assistant present during newborn photo sessions is essential for maintaining a safe and efficient environment. From handling and posing the baby to providing support and assistance throughout the session, an assistant plays a vital role in ensuring the success of the shoot. Therefore, when selecting a newborn photographer, it's important to inquire about the presence of an assistant to ensure the highest standards of safety and quality are upheld. I know at Ity Bity we wouldn't dream of not having a second set of hands during this time. It only takes one second for a baby to jump or move knocking them out of a safe position. Our assistant helps prevent this so baby can stay comfortable & safe at all times while the photographer can get beautiful shots without worry.

Not everyone will have the style you are hoping for so make sure to look over galleries & their social media for a better idea of what type of images you'll receive.
Are you a posed or lifestyle Newborn Photographer?

Studio Photographers will usually have a more polished, posed & luxurious look while Lifestyle Photographers will have a simpler, homie feel.

What Safety Measures Do You Have in Place, Especially Regarding preventing illness?
Given how brand new your little one is, it's crucial to prioritize newborn safety measures during your baby's photo session. Inquire about the photographer's cleaning protocols, such as sanitation practices and social distancing guidelines. If your photographer offers a client closet, ask how & if items are sanitized after each use.
